There is a lot of criticism concerning the suburbs and their associated strip malls, parking lots, and unfettered avarice. The criticism and ranting gets old, stale, and boring. BOTC is always on the look-out for alternative perspectives of our suburbs, places that seem to be the site of the greatest economic, political, and culutral dynamism, however "ugly."

"ugly" we can live with, but don't most criticisms of the suburbs, sprawl, come from concerns that are more serious than that... land use, ecological concerns, etc.? besides, i'm not sure if a mexican flea market in strip mall parking lot makes for a 'good' community center - or if it's just a sad excuse for one...
anyway, in general i agree with you. i'm always a proponent of challenging conventional wisdom. "suburban sprawl = bad" is certainly a reductive oversimplification of a very complex phenomenon...
